    Green building materials are new building materials that possess characteristics such as low carbon, energy-saving, environmental protection, renewability, and low pollution. The core includes prefabricated components, energy-saving insulation, environmentally friendly waterproofing, green finishes, new materials based on solid waste, and is collectively referred to as the "New Three Items" in the building materials industry along with photovoltaic glass and fiberglass composite materials, serving as a core carrier for the "dual carbon" transformation of the construction industry. The core features of the industry are strong policy constraints, accelerated stock replacement, solid waste resource utilization, and significant high-end premium. In 2024, China's green building materials revenue will reach 210 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10%, far exceeding the 3% growth rate of traditional building materials; by 2025, the industry revenue will exceed 250 billion yuan, with an average annual compound growth rate of 20% from 2021 to 2025. Policies clearly state that by 2026, revenue will exceed 300 billion yuan, with the application proportion of green building materials in new buildings exceeding 70% by 2025, and the mandatory application standards for public buildings being fully implemented, allowing the industry to enter a period of large-scale, standardized volume growth.

    I. Upstream: Raw Materials and Equipment, Solid Waste Replacement Becomes Mainstream

    The upstream is composed of basic raw materials and intelligent production equipment, with the core transformation being the industrial solid waste replacing traditional minerals, significantly reducing the industry's carbon emissions. On the raw material side, high-energy-consuming cement and sand and gravel raw materials are abandoned, with recycled materials such as fly ash, slag, coal gangue, and construction demolition waste being the main focus. Currently, the utilization rate of solid waste resources in the green building materials sector is 45%, which can reduce production costs by more than 15%. The building materials industry has demonstrated significant low-carbon results, with carbon emissions cumulatively reduced by 20.4% compared to 2020, steadily declining for four consecutive years. High-end green building materials are paired with high-purity chemical powders, environmentally friendly emulsions, modified resins and other fine materials. The domestic production rate of high-end fine materials is less than 60%, and core additives for high-end waterproofing and insulation still rely on imports.

    The equipment side presents a differentiated pattern, with full domestic production of ordinary forming, drying, and mixing equipment, while high-end precision modification, energy-saving coating, and intelligent sintering equipment have an import dependence of about 35%. Upstream profitability is clearly stratified, with large-scale solid waste raw material companies relying on volume to maintain a gross margin of 10%-15%; fine environmental protection materials and intelligent energy-saving equipment companies, with technical barriers, can achieve a gross margin of 25%-30%, with stability far exceeding that of traditional building material upstream.

    II. Midstream: Processing and Manufacturing, Highlighting Polarization

    The midstream is the core processing segment of green building materials, producing standardized green building material products through low-carbon processes such as modification ratio, low-temperature sintering, modular prefabrication, and composite forming. The industry presents a clear pattern of low-end homogenization and internal competition, and high-end functional premium. The low-end track is dominated by ordinary insulation boards, conventional eco-friendly coatings, and general prefabricated wall panels, with low technical barriers and over 2,000 small and medium-sized manufacturers nationwide clustered in this segment, accounting for over 60% of the market share. The idle rate of low-end capacity exceeds 20%, with an average industry net profit margin of less than 4%, and competition relies entirely on low prices with no product differentiation premium.


    The high-end track has very high barriers, with ultra-low energy consumption aerogel insulation materials, weather-resistant eco-friendly waterproof sealing materials, high-purity prefabricated components, BIPV photovoltaic building materials, and special green building materials for new energy, having triple barriers of formula, technology, and qualifications. By 2025, the domestic production rate of high-end functional green building materials will be less than 50%, with gross margins of segmented high-end products reaching 18%-30%, which is 5-7 times that of low-end products. Among them, high-end aerogel insulation materials and weather-resistant waterproof membranes have an import dependence of over 40%, with significant growth in segmented tracks. By 2025, the proportion of green compliant capacity in the industry will increase to 75%, with continuous elimination of backward high-energy-consuming capacity. Three core industrial clusters have been formed in Guangdong for prefabricated building materials, Hebei for insulation materials, and Sichuan for new solid waste materials.

    III. Downstream: Scene Expansion, Policy + Dual Track Drives High Growth

    Downstream demand has completely detached from the single dependence on traditional real estate, forming a diversified demand pattern for green building renovation, ultra-low energy consumption buildings, new energy infrastructure, and industrial support. The traditional construction field forms the industry base, with the penetration rate of prefabricated buildings in China exceeding 32% by 2025. Ultra-low energy consumption and near-zero energy consumption buildings have an average annual increase of over 50 million square meters. More than 50,000 old communities are renovated annually, continuously supporting basic demand. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, ultra-low energy consumption buildings will drive the green building materials market to expand by over 280 billion yuan, while the "Green Building Materials Going to the Countryside" policy continues to be implemented, steadily releasing demand in the sinking market.


    Emerging tracks have become the core growth engines, with growth rates far exceeding traditional fields. New energy infrastructure such as photovoltaics, wind power, and energy storage drives demand for anti-corrosion, insulation, lightweight green components, and BIPV photovoltaic building materials, with a compound annual growth rate of over 15%. Demand for low-emission, high-flame-retardant green building materials in computing power centers and high-end industrial plants is rising, with a growth rate of 18%. Among the subcategories, the market size of high-end colored stone green roofing materials will exceed 30 billion yuan by 2025, maintaining an annual growth rate of over 8.5%. The policy side is shifting from encouragement to mandatory regulation, with dual mechanisms of government procurement and green building ratings forcing a comprehensive upgrade of building materials, forming a demand pattern of "traditional renovation stabilizing the foundation, new energy infrastructure increasing growth, and high-end industry expanding space."

    IV. Industry Structure and Core Development Trends

    China's green building materials industry is globally leading in scale, accounting for over 38% of the global market share, but it is characterized by being large but not strong. The industry structure is highly fragmented, with a CR10 industry concentration of less than 18%. Small and medium-sized enterprises are clustered in the low-end track with thin profits, while leading brands monopolize the high-end market with technology, qualifications, and channel advantages, and import substitution continues to advance. The industrial structure continues to optimize, with the overall proportion of new green building materials rising to 52% by 2025, surpassing the proportion of traditional building materials such as cement and glass for the first time, and the structural transformation of the building materials industry is basically forming. As of 2025, the proportion of energy-efficient capacity in key building materials fields exceeding 80%, highlighting the effectiveness of the industry's low-carbon transformation.


    The future of the industry is clear with four core trends. First, scale utilization of solid waste, with the penetration rate of industrial solid waste recycled materials continuously improving to achieve resource recycling; second, high-end product functionality, focusing on ultra-low energy consumption, new energy, and industrial special green building materials, breaking through high-end formula and process bottlenecks; third, accelerated localization, gradually replacing imported high-end eco-friendly building materials and precision production equipment; fourth, industry concentration branding, with continuous elimination of low-end capacity. Leading enterprises rely on full-chain layout to integrate the market, and industry concentration is steadily increasing.
